This track was born on the 27th of February. My new Moog Subsequent 37 synth arrived on the 25th. After building a new keyboard rack in the studio and moving a lot of instruments around I didn’t have much time to play the new synth until the 27th. In the days before the new arrival I had been working on something that was intended to be a long Berlin School track / album. Having wired the Subsequent up and played around with it for a bit I came up with the solo sound that you hear in this track. The backing pads and sequences were parts from the longer track I was working on. I was so pleased with the way the 37 was sounding that I decided to make a video. Once the camera was on this short track seemed almost to play itself. Although I was using Ableton to sequence the other synths in the track and to supply effects I didn’t hit record in Ableton. Watching the video back I felt that it worked as a track in its own right. Fortunately, my camera – although quite old, records in stereo .wav at 44.1 so I was able to extract the audio to make a track available here.

One of the best Berlin School/EM albums I’ve heard in years. The concept of long-form space music and ambient meditations too often feels like the indulgence of lazy artists who can’t be bothered to edit their material. (Klaus Schulze, whose name has become synonymous with extremely long tracks, actually released only a fraction of the music he produced.) However they were brought to completion, the two long tracks here are focused and feel fully realized. Paul Asbury Seaman
